Druine Turbulent

Registration Number 0908

Allegedly the oldest homebuilt aircraft in Australia, this little legend first flew in 1958. Yes, that's right, 1958! Originally VH-PWH, built by Peter Hoggens in Sydney, this little demon weighs in at 172 kilos empty, and even when fitted with its original Volkswagen engine (38 hp) was a spritely performer. These days, with its electric start 75 hp Jabiru, 2.2 litre engine, it is a veritable rocket ship!

The climb rate at 60 knots is 1500 feet per minute and the angle of climb seems almost impossibly steep. 500 feet above the ground by the halfway point of the runway is easily achieved. Beautifully light and responsive handling contributes greatly to what is a fantastic little aircraft.

At its best flying close circuits, awesome sideslipped approach and fingertip control to a smooth touchdown. It rewards the pilot handsomely as long as he or she has a delicate touch on the controls. A heavy handed or clumsy pilot will however quickly find themselves out of their depth.

This aircraft is made available to selected pilots on an "invitation" basis. All who fly her contribute to keeping her clean, tidy and maintained.

All in all, maybe the Turbulent is summed up best in the words of Tony Morgan (Hangar Rat)......."How was that Tony?"......He grins............."That was Luuuuvly Guv!"
