Chris and Brendan....Fixed and Rotary

13 times National Aerobatic Champion.....Chris Sperou. A 'true blue' South Australian, he was born in Thevenard on the West Coast and started his working life as a hand line fisherman.

He became interested in aeroplanes at an early stage in life. He paid the price whenever he 'wagged' school in between classes to cycle out to Ceduna airfield to catch a glimpse of military aircraft staging through for a fuel stop.

At the true adult age of 21, Chris immediately joined The Royal Aero Club of South Australia. The trainer was the De Havilland Chipmunk, which was used in the past to train military pilots. He went solo in only a few hours and quickly engaged in 'unusual attitudes' - Aerobatics.

Chris represented The South Australian Aero Club in a three man formation team, winning and assisting to win the National Title nine times, The National Aerobatic and Unlimited Title 13 times as well as representing Australia in The World Aerobatic Titles. Australia did not possess competitive aircraft to match those used by other more liberal countries, but his team did manage to win a bronze medal in the USA in 1980.

He has recently taken delivery of the brand new Pitts S-1-11B 'Super Stinker'. This is the latest of the Pitts range and the only example in Australia. The aircraft is fitted with a 300 HP Lycoming engine, turning a large 3 bladed composite propellor. It has a roll rate of 420 degrees/second and is reportedly capable of some 'helicopter type' manoeuvres.

Brendan Kelly, Chief Pilot for CHC Helicopters (Australia), is the owner of a Pitts Special S-2A VH-XBK, 2 place unlimited aerobatic biplane, powered by 210hp Lycoming and fitted with smoke system, currently based at Aldinga.

He holds Commercial and ATP Licences on Fixed and Rotary Wing Aircraft, Ag ratings on both types, has a Rotary Wing Instructor rating, TRE/IRE Rotary Wing, Command Instrument ratings and is very experienced!! Brendan has been based in Adelaide for CHC Helicopters since 1994 and prior to this, spent 5 years with Lloyd Helicopters in various Check and Training roles throughout Australia and SE Asia.  For more information on CHC go to

Brendan says his wife Debra is a woman of extraordinary understanding, patience and an expert cobra killer! They have a son Chris, currently flying with us in the SportStar, and two daughters Bridget and Laura. Welcome to the Kelly family and another biplane on the airfield....
